OCTAGON HOUSE
A. MAÑOSA ARCHITECTS
Working in collaboration with Architect Gelo Mañosa, whose works showcase a Contemporary-Filipino aesthetic, this custom residential project takes on several of his signature details: the yakal-wood tukod (simulate the propping up of the roof’s eaves akin to those seen in the native Nipa hut), and screen (echoing the look of an ancestral home’s capiz-shell windows). However, it is the two octagonal structures, connected by the main living room, that sets this two-storey home apart. The unusual shape of the main buildings, which posed an initial construction challenge in perfecting angles, is further complemented by even more dynamic forms and unique design elements—a wedge-shaped roof, as well as a canopy that houses the hanging garden.
This 500sqm project also features an adobe stone-clad lower half and a simulated-wood upper half, giving it that heritage home feel. While eco-innovations, such as a rainwater recycling system camouflaged by wooden slats, keep the house thoroughly modern.
